The MIND Team

The MIND Team

Right at the outset, armed with the spirit of volunteerism, BAKTI, through the Lembaga Pentadbir, Bangunan BAKTI Siti Hasmah teamed up with  a wide range of volunteers to embark on the noble project of information provision dedicated to people with disabilities (PWD). Volunteers include  PWDs, academic Staff of Department of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, staff of Medical Rehabilitation Unit University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), as well as the general public. Under the guidance and leadership of Assoc. Prof. Dato’ Dr Zaliha Omar, who was then Head of Medical Rehabilitation Unit UMMC, they worked tirelessly on gathering information and contents, which can be posted on MIND. The type of information collected was based on a research survey identifying the needs of PWD that had been  carried out at the UMMC. Such information form the basis for the structure and development of the website, which began in the second quarter of 2005.

Our volunteers worked very hard for months to gather useful and relevant information on various aspects of disabilities. These data and information materials were sorted into categories for ease of access by users on the website. Although much has been done, it may not be as comprehensive as most people would expect. We would try to upgrade and improve the articles posted on the website from time to time. Nevertheless, we hope that what we have done and will continue to do in future is relevant to providing useful and comprehensive 'disability related' information which can be accessed by Malaysians with disabilities, their families and caregivers, health care professionals, and medical rehabilitation team and community providers of care for PWD.

We aim to create an environment focusing on awareness of disability issues with topics of interest for Malaysians. However, whilst our workload grew exponentially, the number of volunteers began to decrease, probably due to unavoidable factors like time and work constraint, study commitments, poor health and possibly loss of interest. Whatever the reason may be, we express our sincere thanks and gratitude for their participation and contribution to the MIND project particularly at the most difficult time at the beginning.

In order for work on the website to progress and  be kept on track, the Board of Administration BBSH appointed the first batch of part-time staff in April 2005. Preference was given to PWD.
