Exercise, physical activity and fitness are important for persons with disabilities (PWD). Research has shown that participating in sports and physical activity is associated with many positive outcomes. Among the importance of physical activity are to:

For PWD, it is also a form of rehabilitation.
Although there is substantial research to show that exercise improves health, inactivity is common among PWD. Inactivity of PWD has been linked to various barriers. The most cited ones are:

When Malaysian PWD were asked why they do not exercise, most said they do not know what is available and where to go.
